ROCKWELL AUTOMATION

Rockwell Automation's RSHistorian is a specialized data historian application.  RSHistorian is a time series database that is one specific implementation of the broader RSSQL package under the RSBizWare suite of software products.   These applications record data from process control systems (ex. DCS, PLC) into an MS SQL or Oracle database.

This application allows manufacturing sites to monitor their facilities and provides a rich set of information for troubleshooting and process/product optimization.

Rockwell Automation has announced several new modules to add to their RSBizware offering.

We have experience with the design, installation, configuration, and customization of Rockwell software products.

We have created a simulator that allowed us to understand the capabilities of the Rockwell offering and to do some load testing. We created a Visual Basic routine that simulates I/O for a multi-unit batch facility. The VB routine feeds RSView data objects for the following simulated data:

  • Jacket and contents temperature
  • Kettle level
  • Mixer motor on/off
  • Mixer speed
  • Pump motor on/off
  • Kettle level
  • Flowrate
These data points are simulated with a random instrument noise and separate process noise components. The simulator allows you to specify the data creation frequency, thus you can measure the amount of disk space consumed by the process historian for a specific

When the simulated batch process is run, it steps through a batch recipe containing the following simulated recipe steps:

  • Start/End Batch
  • Mixer On/Off and set speed
  • Jacket and cascaded contents temperature control On/Off and set setpoint
  • Solution Addition
  • Transfer kettle contents
Using the RSView connector into RSHistorian, it records the data points over time. In addition, RSSQL is used to record batch related 'industrial transactions' for:
  • Batch Start/End
  • Solution Additions
