Top 10 tips to keep your Windows computer running Fast and Efficient

At Automated Results, we have clients that are experiencing their computers getting slower and slower.  This can be caused by multiple things.  Here is our Top 10 ways of keeping your computer running fast and efficient.

1.       Have a good Anti-virus Software Installed.  Having sufficient virus protection will prevent viruses that slow down your computer.  If you need assistance with choosing the right protection, checkout our Anti-virus Blog.

2.       Have a good Malware Detection Software Installed on your computer and run it on a regular basis.  If you need assistance with Malware Removal, checkout out our Spyware Blog.

3.       We all enjoy games but watch which one and how many games you download and install from the internet.  These games tend to be full of ads and useless graphics that slow your computer performance down greatly.  The more games you install the more memory gets wasted away.

4.       Avoid any software that says “improve your computer speed.”  This kind of software cost money, is very ineffective, and even slows your computer down.  Before installing any performance enhancing software, do your research.  Google the software and see what others say about it.

5.       If you download any programs from the internet, go directly to the software website and download from there.  Be very careful downloading software from 3rd Party websites because this is a good way to have hidden programs installed on your computer.  Again do your research before downloading anything.

6.       Avoid clogging your computer with tons of pictures downloaded from your digital camera.  These pictures are usually large files.  I suggest you invest in an external hard drive and store your pictures and documents on it.  Doing this will keep the space freed up on your computer and also you have these files in a safe location in case your computer crashes.

7.       Run Microsoft Disk Cleanup at least once a week.  You can do this by going to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools> and click on Disk Cleanup.  This will clean out unwanted temp files.

8.       Run Microsoft Disk Defragmenter at least once a month.  You can do this by going to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools> and click on Disk Defragmenter.  This will clean out unwanted temp files.

9.       Keep you Microsoft updates up-to-date.

10.   Finally monitor your memory usage.  Do this by holding down Alt-Ctrl-Delete, select Task Manager, Click on the Performance Tab, Under the PF Usage make sure the usage is at or below 70% of your total Physical Memory.  If your usage is above 70% it may be time for a memory upgrade.

If you follow these Top 10 ways, you should see an improvement in your computers performance.  If you need any assistance feel free to contact us here at Automated Results.
