Get Google Analytics to Track Sitefinity Searches

Curious whether website visitors are using your internal Sitefinity search engine to navigate through your website?

Have you setup a Sitefinity Search box?  If not, go to: http://www.sitefinitywatch.com/blog/09-06-25/Working_with_Sitefinity_Search.aspx

Once you have setup Sitefinity Site Search, then it can be useful to track it with Google Analytics.  Google Analytics provides a configuration where you tell Google how to interpret the query string to recognize a site search.

It is simple to setup and yet another view into your website visitor's experience:

  1. Go to www.google.com and log into your Google account
  2. Click on Settings in the upper right corner and select Google Account settings from the dropdown
  3. Click on Analytics
  4. Click on the account you want to modify
  5. Under the actions column on the far right, click on Edit
  6. That account's profile screen will be displayed
  7. Under the main website information, there is an attribute: Site Search
  8. Click the Edit button in the upper right corner of the 'Main Website Information' block
  9. Go down to the 'Site Search' section and fill in the fields as shown below
    1. The 'SearchQuery' parameter is generated by Sitefinity
    2. The 'General' parameter is the name of my Search Index, you need to put your own in.

  11. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page and you are done!

Why Give Our Secrets Away?

I often get asked why I'm willing to journal all of my Sitefinity discoveries. People think I'm insane to give away for free what I labored over at some point.

Let me answer that in 2 parts:

  • Why journal my discoveries?

    Because I forget and I want to a library of knowledge to refer back to. Oh but it is far worse than that... THREE TIMES now, I've gone to Google and searched for a solution to a problem, only to find MY OWN BLOG entry is #1 in Google and viola! there's the solution!
  • Why give it away for free?

    Because others have been kind enough to do it for us; what goes around, comes around.

    There are all levels of experience, thus someone with less experience may defer to us when needed.

    The lines of 'competition' are very much blurred; in our minds competition is a potential customer or partnership in the right situation.

    We maintain healthy partnerships with one of our competitors; they come to us when they need help and visa versa.

    There is plenty of work out there for everyone if you are putting out quality work and you are straightforward with clients and competition.
